Yay! I’m making all kinds of weird cooing noises right now because I love the work of Pina Bausch, the revolutionary former director of Germany’s Tanztheater Wuppertal, and I also have a childhood attachment to Wim Wenders (we were big fans of Wings of Desire in my family, that is probably strange?). I can’t imagine a more perfect director than Wenders to pay homage to Bausch’s gorgeously distinct combination of dance and theater. And of course, he already has — but this time he’s doing it large, with Pina, a 3D arthouse film made in tribute to the late choreographer’s work.

What’s more wonderful than even the pairing of Wenders with Bausch’s work is that the movie will be in, yes, 3D. The film is creating a whole lot of buzz because it’s the first independent, arthouse film to take advantage of the form. And while this might mean woefully fewer lasers and/or aliens flying like, literally right at you during your 3D film experience, it is a fantastic idea — performance art, as our site designer can tell you, is one of those perpetually underfunded artforms. Hopefully merging it with the bombastic — in the sense of finance as well as visuals — trend of 3D film will bring new interest to contemporary dance.

And if nothing else, let’s also just take a moment to realize that we’ve got perhaps the best picture of my bff Angie in some killer shades out of this:
