Delicious Noodle by Buzz Mauro

in Everyday Genius

Here’s an interesting look at what a short story can be, particularly in the online literary universe where short-shorts, or flash fiction, or microfiction, are embraced if not required. Indeed, as its narrative thread suggests, “Delicious Noodle” may well have been dashed off, in its earliest form anyway, between bites at a Chinese buffet. Anchored by the “I” persona over his plate of Singapore rice noodles, the story takes in fragments of eavesdropped dialogue from a neighboring table between two “guys” whose identities, beyond their attire, are never any clearer than their topic of conversation. And yet, dressed up with a few offhand observations, whimsical musings and flourishes of free association, “Delicious Noodles” asserts itself as a convincing self-contained whole. To boot, you learn the regrettable fate of the narrator’s maternal grandfather….-Ryan Nelson
