The great New Jersey freeform radio station WFMU, which has neither corporate sponsorship nor government funding (i.e. NO CREEPS) is having its pledge drive right now. Tom Scharpling, the host of world’s strangest call-in show, The Best Show on WFMU, is one of the funniest people on the planet, and he’s put together his own package for donors who pledge at least $75 during his show, which airs tonight from 9PM-12AM: The “Don’t Stop Me Now Fantasy Pack.” First and foremost, there’s A 7″ record, Rated GG, which is easily the best concept album of the year: it features The Mountain Goats, Fucked Up, Ty Segall, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, and Ted Leo (who, along with The New Pornographers’ Carl Newman will be appearing on Scharpling’s show TONIGHT) performing family-friendly versions of G.G. Allin songs. A poster drawn by friend of the site Charles Burns (you can read our interview with him here), a t-shirt, and a button are also included.
To pledge call 1800-989-9368 or visit WFMU’S web site and insta-pledge. All pledges of $75 or more get the fantasy pack. If you miss the telethon this week, you can pledge next week from 9PM-12AM. At the very least, this is a great time to become acquainted with Scharpling’s show, which is the biggest reason I’m pledging to the station (though certainly not the only one). You should pledge whenever you get the chance: WFMU is an independent treasure and over the past ten years Scharpling has created his own strange and wonderful universe through The Best Show. And until Eric and I throw our fishing hats into the ring, we endorse the charming Geneva for protege.

If you’re mystified by why G-rated covers of G.G. Allin songs is such a good idea, you should probably check out his songs on youtube. Or, if you don’t want to waste your time listening to filth, you can learn everything you need from this picture:
If you’ve stuck around this long, you deserve to be rewarded. Here’s the music video for The New Pornographers’ Moves, which Scharpling directed:
